Three things to book early
- The cathedral roofs. They go in groups at set times, on sale up to 60 days ahead. If they're full, there are free Pórtico invitations from 16:00 to 17:30.
- The Cíes Islands in season. Without Xunta de Galicia authorisation you won't board. It applies at Easter and from 15 May to 15 September.
- As Catedrais. The booking is free, but you need one at Easter and from 1 July to 30 September. Check if your excursion handles it.
How to split your time
One day covers the cathedral and the old town. The basilica needs no ticket and you can visit outside Mass times. Build the rest around the fixed times: roofs, Pórtico or the night visit.
Two days: use the second to get out. The classic trip is Finisterre and the Costa da Morte. Others go to the Ribeira Sacra by boat, As Catedrais with Lugo and Ribadeo, and the Cíes Islands by ferry.
On a cruise calling at A Coruña or Vigo, there are full-day excursions built for that stop.
Don't pay twice for the Museum
Any cathedral ticket already includes the permanent collection, the Gelmírez Palace and MuSar, which you can see that day or in the next seven.
Evenings offer a queimada show with a tasting, or tapas in the old town.

It was a great introduction to the history of St James as it relates to the Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Our guide, Carolina, spoke clearly and welcomed questions from the people in the tour. She explained things with enough detail so we appreciated the artifacts we were looking at.

The ear pieces were great, I could still hear the guide without having to stand next to him. He was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot, would recommend this tour.

This was an easy trip to book, no fuss. Good value and very straightforward access to the Cathedral. The tour was good and the tour guide was well informed. The museum and artefacts were beautiful and wide ranging. All in all about an hour end to end and it was time to enough to enjoy the tour thoroughly.

I think the outstanding points were being able to see fully the Portico in all its splendour, something I appreciated later as I walked around the main part of the cathedral and saw people straining to get a half decent view of it from the wrong side. Additionally the exhibition about Master Mateo was fascinating. If I had had more time I would have stopped to watch the whole feature film.

The Cathedral and the museum are very good. The audio guide is almost worthless and it was better to just read what was written. Don't bother.
