From Madrid: train, bus and the climb

The Avant leaves Atocha roughly every hour, and Toledo's tourist office quotes 25 minutes. A direct bus from Plaza Elíptica takes an hour. The station sits below the city: walking up to the old town takes about 20 minutes with the escalators. If you're comparing this with a day trip from Madrid, count that climb and which tickets each trip includes.

Does the bracelet pay off

For €14 the tourist bracelet (pulsera turística) gets you into 7 monuments once each, including San Juan de los Reyes, Santo Tomé and Santa María la Blanca. You have seven days from purchase. Single tickets are €4, so three monuments cost €12 and the bracelet only pays from the fourth. The Cathedral is separate, at €12.

A day in the city, a day at Puy du Fou

Toledo works in a day if you stick to the Cathedral and two or three old-town monuments. On Sundays the Cathedral doesn't open until 14:00. A second day can go to Puy du Fou, which is outside the city and doesn't open daily. Check its calendar before you settle your hotel: it's the first thing to book.

To get your bearings, there are 90-minute old-town routes and night tours with legends and underground visits. On a guided Cathedral tour, check that entry is included.
