Rioja and Ribera: book with the winery

The big names in Haro and Ribera del Duero barely appear on the ticket cards, so you book direct. Bodegas Muga, in Haro's Barrio de la Estación, charges €30 for about 90 minutes with 2 wines, Monday to Saturday. It admits no under-12s and no latecomers, and cancelling with less than 48 hours' notice loses your money. Pago de Carraovejas, in Valladolid, lists experiences from €85, of 2 to 3 hours. Some run Wednesday to Sunday, one Friday to Tuesday.

Which region from which city

From Barcelona, the Penedès is easiest: Codorníu, Freixenet, Torres and Jean Leon, several with organised departures from the city. From Seville or Cádiz, it's Jerez: see the bodegas and cathedral page. For Rioja, there's a day trip from Bilbao. From Málaga, the option with a ticket card is Bodega Doña Felisa in Ronda.

Not every wine ticket is a winery

A tasting in Barcelona, a tapas and wine route or the Royal Palace with a tasting isn't a winery visit. Nor is the Setenil de las Bodegas tour: that's a village.

Compare the number of wines, any tapa or meal, and whether it's a led tasting or one glass. Then settle the driving: by car, one of you doesn't taste. On a trip with transport everyone drinks, but you keep to the group's timetable.
