Opening hours
Monday to Saturday: 10:00–18:00 from October to March, and 10:00–19:00 from April to September. Sundays: 10:00–16:00. The ticket office and entry close one hour earlier. On 24 and 31 December it closes at 15:00.

The free slot probably isn't yours

From Monday to Thursday the palace is free 16:00–18:00 from October to March and 17:00–19:00 from April to September, but only for EU citizens, residents and work-permit holders in the EU, and Ibero-American citizens, with proof. A UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport doesn't qualify on its own. Without EU residence or an EU work permit, plan on paying.

If you do qualify, arrive at the start: last entry is an hour before the slot ends, at 17:00 or 18:00 depending on the season. The ticket comes only from the ticket office and covers the unguided visit, without the Royal Kitchen.

Everyone, whatever their nationality, gets in free on 18 May and 12 October, unless the palace is closed. At any hour, with a document, entry is free for under-5s, members of a familia numerosa (official large-family status), working teachers, unemployed people and people with a disability of 33% or more.

Buy before you travel

Patrimonio Nacional warns that ticket-office sales are limited, so don't count on them. The basic ticket is €18 on its website plus a €0.77 fee per person. If that site has your time, it's the cheapest way in. A reseller makes sense only when it adds something: a guide, a small group, a route with La Almudena Cathedral. Audio guide versions have mixed ratings.

The €9 reduced ticket covers children aged 5 to 16, over-65s and students up to 25 with a current national or international student card.

If your date has sold out

Try another slot that day, then the cards on this page, where guided tours run at other times. If only the ticket office is left, go early with no fixed plan, because its allocation is small.

Closures that can wreck a plan

The palace closes for official events, sometimes several days running, so look for a notice on this page before you fix your visit. On Sundays it shuts at 16:00, with entry ending at 15:00. The changing of the guard is on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 11:00 and 14:00, official events and bad weather permitting. To see it, take a ticket outside that window.
