Day trips in Spain

From Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Málaga: what to book, what to do alone.

Tickets and tours

Each seller's price in euros, depending on date and time. These are affiliate links: if you buy, we earn a commission and you pay the same.

From Madrid: train or coach

For one city, the train is usually enough. Toledo is 25 minutes from Atocha and Segovia 25 from Chamartín. A coach wins when you pair two in a day, such as Toledo and Segovia or Ávila and Segovia. The catch: each city gets only a few hours, enough for Toledo Cathedral and little else. See day trips from Madrid.

Go by the title. A trip with "+ Alcázar of Segovia Entry" includes that monument; a near-identical one can leave you at the door. The Alcázar of Segovia often sells out at weekends and over public holidays. El Escorial closes on Mondays.

From Barcelona: Figueres and the border

The Dalí Theatre-Museum closes on Mondays except in July, August and special dates, which leaves the Figueres trip without its main sight. For Andorra and France, bring your documents. See day trips from Barcelona.

From Seville and Granada

On trips from Seville, the same title check applies to the Mosque-Cathedral. Alhambra tickets are in your name: bring original ID. Medina Azahara closes on Mondays, with the odd exception.

From Málaga: Gibraltar

The Caminito del Rey closes on Mondays, with the odd exception. See trips from Málaga.

Gibraltar changed its entry requirements under the treaty applied on 15 July 2026. Bring a valid passport, or national ID if you're an EU citizen. If your nationality needs a visa, get it before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Organised tour or train to Toledo?

If you're only going to Toledo, the train from Atocha takes 25 minutes and runs about once an hour. A tour makes sense if you want a guide or a second city the same day.

Do day trips include entry tickets?

Not always. Look for "+ Entry" in the title and confirm on the product page which monuments are covered. If they aren't listed, you pay there or stay outside.

What do I need to enter Gibraltar?

Bring a valid passport, or a national ID card if you're an EU citizen. If your nationality needs a visa for Gibraltar, you must have it before you travel.
