Toledo or Segovia by train

If Toledo is all you want, compare with going independently. The Avant train from Atocha leaves roughly every hour and takes about 25 minutes, according to Toledo's tourist office, but you still have to get up to the old town. For Segovia, the fast train stops at Guiomar, 6 km from the centre, so a coach trip saves you a change.

How many towns fit in a day

With one town you walk without hurrying and go inside its monuments. With two, such as Toledo and Segovia or Ávila and Segovia, you spend longer on the coach and each stop shrinks to the main sights. Three-town trips are a quick look, worth it only if you won't get another chance.

Same title, different trip

Some trips include the Alcázar of Segovia or Toledo Cathedral and others leave them optional. Compare like with like before you look at the price.

Days to avoid

El Escorial closes every Monday. Toledo Cathedral opens at 14:00 on Sundays, so a Sunday-morning trip won't get past its façade. The Alcázar of Segovia often sells out at weekends, long weekends and public holidays, and on those dates a trip with the ticket already included removes that risk.

Frequently asked questions

Toledo or Segovia for a day trip from Madrid?

Toledo if you're drawn to the historic city and its cathedral, Segovia for the aqueduct and the Alcázar. If you have one day and want both, take a combined trip and accept you'll see each one quickly.

Can you get to Toledo from Madrid on your own?

Yes. Toledo's tourist office says the Avant train leaves Atocha roughly every hour and takes about 25 minutes. Buses also run from Plaza Elíptica.

Which days should I avoid?

Mondays, when El Escorial is closed, and Sunday mornings in Toledo, because the cathedral doesn't open until 14:00.
