€7 or €10, and who gets in free

The Palace and Museum cost €7, and the Juan II Tower takes that to €10. Reduced rates of €5 and €8 exist, but we couldn't confirm who qualifies, so plan on the general price.

The free Tuesday slot is for EU citizens only: Palace and Museum, 14:00–16:00, except public holidays. UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitors pay the normal price. The free ticket is individual and issued at the ticket office during those hours, until capacity runs out. The tower isn't covered.

The tower sells out first

It adds 152 spiral steps, with no access for reduced mobility, and a limit of 25 minutes up there. Tower tickets go first, especially at weekends, long weekends and public holidays. If you want one, buy ahead on the official site, and check any product includes it: several excursions only say Alcázar.

If they've gone, try another time or settle for the Palace and Museum. Guided tours and excursions with entry included are the second route. It's busiest 11:00–13:30, so aim for first thing or mid-afternoon.

Audio guide or Spanish tour

Both cost €3.50 extra, and you ask for them at the ticket office before you start. The audio guide comes in 12 languages; the guided visit is in Spanish. At that price it's worth adding one if you're going alone. Tours make sense if you also want the city or the Cathedral.

Half a day covers it

The visit and the aqueduct, which is free from the street, fit in half a day. It closes at 18:00 from November to March and at 19:30 from April to October, and ticket sales and entry end 30 minutes earlier. From Madrid, see the day trips.
