Which museums close on Mondays

The Museu Picasso, Fundació Miró, nearly always the Guggenheim Bilbao, and the Dalí Theatre-Museum except in July, August and special dates. The Prado and Thyssen stay open on Mondays. The Reina Sofía and MACBA close on Tuesdays instead.

Free slots, museum by museum

The Prado and the Museo Picasso Málaga open these slots to all visitors.

Prado: the collection, Monday to Saturday 18:00–20:00, Sundays and public holidays 17:00–19:00. Ticket office only, until full.
Reina Sofía: Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 19:00–21:00, Sundays 12:30–14:30. Book online.
Thyssen: Mondays 12:00–16:00, permanent collection, no ticket needed.
Museu Picasso, Barcelona: Thursdays 16:00–19:00 and the first Sunday of the month. Booking opens four days before, at 10:00.
Museo Picasso Málaga: Sundays, the last two hours.

The Guggenheim has no fixed free day, and its price changes with the date. City lists: free museums in Madrid and in Barcelona.

When paying wins

Two late-afternoon hours won't cover the Prado. For a proper visit, pay the €15. Under-18s and students aged 18 to 25 don't pay there, and under-18s don't pay at the Museu Picasso. If you want the Reina Sofía quieter, it suggests 14:00–18:00.

Our experience in the museum was amazing! I also really liked the application "Dex" where we could listen to the story behind the painting however it was not applicable for all of the paintings but there were still an amount of them. It was really great and I really suggest you too have an audio guidance with you.

Really enjoyed the temporary exhibits/ Dutch paintings/ Dali/ Kenny Scharf. Admired a lot of the American artist that are part of the permanent collection. The staff were very helpful for a non Spanish speaker like myself. It's a beautiful building and setting. Thank you.

we were at the entrance before 10;00 am. as soon as the museum open we were able to get in with tickets bought from Headout and gain a lot of time. so, no crowd as majority of guests were on line to purchase tickets. we enjoyed the museum and spend more time watching beautiful paintings as well as Rodin's pieces

The museum itself is excellent. However we could have done with a little help with the audio guide at the start. We went on the audio highlights tour and it just took us a little while to understand where paintings were etc.

If visiting Prado and not an art history expert, I'd strongly recommend a guided tour. Hearing the tour guide via the headphones was occassionally difficult due to background noise and the museum itself was quite crowded but I think I'd have enjoyed it less without being part of the guided tour.

Very informative guide, Sara, who took us to prominent artwork and explained the features. Loved her knowledge and passion. She led us through a maze of rooms that would have confused us. The tour was excellent - the only issue was ticketing and gaining access which took almost an hour.

Which museums in Spain are free, and when?

In Madrid, the Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen have free slots every week. In Barcelona, the Museu Picasso on Thursday afternoons and the MNAC on Saturdays from 15:00, both with a booking. In Málaga, the Museo Picasso on Sundays, for the last two hours.

When is the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid free?

Tuesdays 15:00–17:00 and Sundays 18:30–20:00, except from 1 July to 14 September. It's closed on Mondays, apart from public holidays.

Which museums are free on Barcelona's Museums Night?

CaixaForum, Palau Güell and Sant Pau are free that night. At Palau Güell the free ticket is online only.

Which museums are free on 18 May, International Museum Day?

The Reina Sofía, the Museo Picasso Málaga and CosmoCaixa, among others.
