Three days without crossing town twice

Put the Prado and the Thyssen on the same day: both are on the Paseo del Prado. On another, see the Royal Palace in the morning and the Reina Sofía in the afternoon. Keep the third for the Bernabéu tour or a day trip to Toledo.

The Reina Sofía closes on Tuesdays and El Escorial on Mondays, and on Mondays the Thyssen opens for only four hours.

Buy the palace and the Bernabéu first

The palace sells few tickets at its ticket office and can close for official events. The Bernabéu is sold by date and time, with no changes or refunds on its own website, and on match days the tour stops 5 h 30 before kick-off, so check the league fixtures before you pay.

Paying for the art museums

The official Paseo del Arte pass is €32.80, against €41 for three separate tickets. If your age or student status gets you into one free, do the sums first. At the Royal Palace, free hours are only for EU citizens, residents and work-permit holders in the EU, and Ibero-American citizens. Free museums in Madrid has every condition.

Theme parks with children

At Parque Warner a dated online ticket starts at €32.90, against €62.90 at the ticket office. Parque de Atracciones, Zoo Aquarium Madrid and Faunia work the same way. For the evening, look at flamenco shows or guided tours.

Our experience in the museum was amazing! I also really liked the application "Dex" where we could listen to the story behind the painting however it was not applicable for all of the paintings but there were still an amount of them. Which Madrid museums are free, and when?

The Prado: Monday to Saturday 18:00–20:00, Sundays and public holidays 17:00–19:00. The Reina Sofía: Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 19:00–21:00, Sundays 12:30–14:30. The Thyssen: Mondays 12:00–16:00, permanent collection only.

Is the Paseo del Arte pass worth it?

It costs €32.80 and the three museums add up to €41 separately. It pays off if you'd pay the general price at all three, not if you get into any of them free or at a reduced rate.

Which Madrid tickets should I book in advance?

The Royal Palace, because ticket-office sales are limited, and the Bernabéu tour, which is sold by date and time. Also the theme parks, where dated online tickets cost far less.

What's open on Mondays in Madrid?

The Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Royal Palace all open on Mondays. The Thyssen opens only 12:00–16:00. El Escorial Monastery is closed.

What can you do in Madrid with kids?
