Hop-on hop-off bus

There are 3 routes and 34 stops, with a bus every 15 to 20 minutes according to the operator, traffic permitting. It suits you if walking is hard or you're short of time. Adults pay €33 for 24 hours and €44 for 48 hours: €11 more for a second day, which only pays off if you really ride it on both. The operator advertises 10% off online, so compare with the card before paying. If you're adding the Bernabéu tour, a combined ticket covers both.

Walks for your first day, and after dark

On day one, a walk or the bus is usually enough to get your bearings. The Welcome to Madrid walk has thousands of reviews and a very high score. The after-dark routes on legends and the Inquisition suit people who already know the basics.

Where a paid guide earns its fee

Inside a museum or a palace. At the Prado or the Royal Palace a guide stops you getting lost among the rooms. Check whether entry is included and whether the group is small.

Tapas routes

A tapas route saves you hunting for a table at night. Check what food and drink the price covers and what time it starts.
