What you'll actually pay

Unless you're in a free or reduced group, your price is €15 on the museum's website, with day and entry time chosen when you buy. An audio guide takes it to €20, and a guided visit bought at the ticket office to €25.

Free at any hour, with a document at the ticket office on the day: under-18s, students aged 18 to 25, working teachers, unemployed people and people with a disability of 33% or more. A family with teenagers pays only for the adults, so buy just those tickets.

The €7.50 reduced ticket is for over-65s, holders of the Carné Joven (a youth card) and members of a familia numerosa (official large-family status), also proved at the ticket office. The conditions we've read don't say which foreign documents count, so if yours isn't Spanish, ask there before counting on it.

The free last two hours

The Collection is free for all visitors, whatever their nationality: Monday to Saturday 18:00–20:00, Sundays and public holidays 17:00–19:00. The catch is the ticket. It comes only from the ticket office, until capacity runs out, so you can't secure a place in advance.

You won't get the full two hours either. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing and rooms start clearing 10 minutes before it, so being first in gives you 1 h 50. That's enough to head straight for Las Meninas and The Garden of Earthly Delights, and little else. Temporary exhibitions aren't covered: they cost half price in those hours.

When a reseller or the pass makes sense

If your time is still available on the museum's site, there's no reason to pay more. A reseller earns its margin in two cases: a small group with a guide, or the Prado joined to another visit on one tour. The app audio guide ticket has weak ratings, so read its reviews first.

The Paseo del Arte pass covers the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen for €32.80, saving €8.20 if you'd pay general admission at all three. Over-65s gain nothing, because the Reina Sofía is already free for them.

If visiting Prado and not an art history expert, I'd strongly recommend a guided tour. Hearing the tour guide via the headphones was occassionally difficult due to background noise and the museum itself was quite crowded but I think I'd have enjoyed it less without being part of the guided tour.

Very informative guide, Sara, who took us to prominent artwork and explained the features. Loved her knowledge and passion. She led us through a maze of rooms that would have confused us. The tour was excellent - the only issue was ticketing and gaining access which took almost an hour.

I absolutely loved this tour! Our guide, Jesús, was incredibly knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail, but always in such an engaging and enjoyable way. He made the whole experience truly memorable. I would definitely do this tour again and highly recommend it!

The Prado museum tour was excellent. The meeting point was clear and easy to find. Our guide was extremely informative and picked very interesting works for us to observe making the museum far less intimidating. I highly recommend this tour.

Easy to get into thyssen. They scanned the bar code. Was surprised to have to queue at the Prado to get a ticket. I assumed when I booked this I would avoid a ticket line. Both museums excellent.
