€12 is enough for one trip
General admission is €12. The €18 two-visit ticket lets you return within a year, which only suits you if you live nearby or know you're coming back to Madrid.
The official audio guide adds €6. Resellers' audio guide versions have very low ratings, so read the reviews before choosing one. The Prado and the Thyssen share the €32.80 Paseo del Arte pass with this museum, which stops paying off if you get in free here.
Free hours still need a ticket
Unlike the Prado, the Reina Sofía issues its free tickets online, so reserve as soon as you know your day. The slot runs Monday and Wednesday to Saturday 19:00–21:00, and Sundays 12:30–14:30, for individual visitors. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing and the rooms clear 15 minutes before it.
That leaves just under two hours, enough to go straight to Guernica. For the rest of the collection pay for a ticket, because the museum itself reckons on about two hours for the route.
Free all day, with proof
Under-18s, over-65s, students aged 18 to 25, Carné Joven (youth card) holders, unemployed people, working teachers and people with a disability of 33% or more. It's a longer list than at the Prado or the Thyssen. These tickets come only from the ticket office, on the same day, with your proof, so buy nothing beforehand. Foreign students are advised to bring an ISIC card. With any other foreign document, ask at the ticket office before relying on it.
Which door, and when to come
With a ticket on your phone, the museum advises going in through the Nouvel Building at Ronda de Atocha 2. For a calmer visit it suggests 14:00 to 18:00. Avoid Sundays unless you're after the free slot: the museum closes at 14:30, leaving two and a half paid hours.

Our experience in the museum was amazing! I also really liked the application "Dex" where we could listen to the story behind the painting however it was not applicable for all of the paintings but there were still an amount of them. It was really great and I really suggest you too have an audio guidance with you.

Easy to get into thyssen. They scanned the bar code. Was surprised to have to queue at the Prado to get a ticket. I assumed when I booked this I would avoid a ticket line. Both museums excellent.

Our guide, Gabi, was very warm, welcoming and knowledgeble. She was a delight to listen to (excellent English) as we made our way through the Reina Sofia. She paced the tour perfectly, giving us a nice amount of time to learn about Guernica at the end.
