Day trip or on your own

The monastery is in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, outside Madrid. Go on your own and you pay €14 and control your time. A tour costs more but carries you there and back, and most pair the monastery with Cuelgamuros, the former Valley of the Fallen. Check on each listing whether monastery entry is included. A full-day trip can add Segovia.

Free afternoons: who qualifies

On Wednesdays and Sundays from 15:00, entry is free for EU citizens, residents and work-permit holders in the EU, and Ibero-American citizens, with proof of nationality, residence or work permit. A UK, US, Canadian or Australian passport won't do it on its own: without EU residence or an EU work permit, you pay.

Closing is 18:00 from October to March and 19:00 from April to September, but the ticket office and entry stop 1 hour 15 minutes earlier. In winter that means going in by 16:45. Free entry covers the unguided visit only.

Also free at any hour, with a document: members of a familia numerosa (official large-family status), working teachers, unemployed people and people with a disability of 33% or more. Everyone gets in free on 18 May and 12 October.

Which door to use

The ticket offices are in the Visitor Reception Centre, opposite the north façade, but individual visitors enter on the west façade through the Patio de Reyes. With an online ticket, go straight to the west.

What €14 covers

The general ticket includes the Painting and Architecture Museums. An audio guide is €5 extra and a guide €8. If you're comparing with a seller's digital version, add those amounts to the official €14 first. There's more in day trips from Madrid.
