Sunday afternoon is the rule to remember: from 15:00, a long list of Barcelona museums stops charging. On the first Sunday of the month the Picasso Museum, MNAC, MACBA and Palau Güell join them. Several need a booking first.

"Booking not mentioned" means the official site neither asks for one nor rules it out. Check before you set off.

One side of town on Sunday afternoon

Pick an area. On Montjuïc, pair the castle with the Museu Etnològic. In Ciutat Vella, pair MUHBA with the Museu Marítim, which stays open until 20:00. Crossing between the two uses up your free hours.

Two alarms for the first Sunday

The Picasso Museum opens bookings four days before your visit, at 10:00, which for a Sunday means the Wednesday. Palau Güell releases its tickets on the Thursday before, also at 10:00, online only. Set both if that Sunday is your only chance.

Several places close early that day: MACBA and MNAC at 15:00, the Museu d'Història de Catalunya at 14:30. Go in the morning.

Fixed dates at other museums

CaixaForum is free on 15 February, Museums Night, 18 May and 24 September. CosmoCaixa on 15 February, 18 May and 24 September. Sant Pau on 23 April, Museums Night and 24 September.

Fundació Miró lists no free slot open to everyone. If you're going at other times, compare with Articket. On free days the pass gives no fast-track entry, so don't buy it for those dates.

What museums are free in Barcelona on Sunday?

From 15:00: MUHBA, Museu Marítim, Museu de Ciències Naturals, Museu Etnològic, Pedralbes Monastery, Montjuïc Castle and CCCB. On the first Sunday of the month more join in, including the Picasso Museum, MNAC, MACBA and Palau Güell.

When is the Picasso Museum free?

Thursdays 16:00–19:00 and the first Sunday of each month, always with a booking. Booking opens four days before your visit, from 10:00.

Do I need to book for free museum entry?

Yes at the Picasso Museum, MNAC, Palau Güell and CCCB. Palau Güell gives out its free tickets online only.

Are free hours only for EU citizens or residents?

The official wording quoted on this page sets conditions on days, hours and booking. None of it mentions nationality or residence.

Is Articket any use during free hours?

You don't need it, and it gives no fast-track entrance on those days and at those times.
