When the train is enough

Montserrat is the easy one without a tour: FGC trains leave Plaça Espanya every hour from 08:26, and you finish by rack railway or cable car.

Residents of Spain and the EU travelling independently don't pay the sanctuary's tourist charge. That exemption doesn't cover organised trips, or anyone living outside the EU.

When a tour pays off

Girona, Figueres and Cadaqués in one day is where a tour pulls ahead. Check two things first. The Dalí Theatre-Museum closes on Mondays, except in July and August and on certain dates. And not every tour includes the museum ticket. For proper time in Figueres, go there on its own.

PortAventura is sold with a park ticket and transfer from Barcelona, so there's no car or train to sort out with children. Look at the park's calendar for your date first.

Long coach days: Andorra and the Costa Brava

Trips pairing Andorra with France leave little time at each stop, and for Andorra you must carry your documents. The Costa Brava works better in a small group, or built around an activity such as kayaking and snorkelling, when the sea is warm.

Can I get to Montserrat without a tour?

Yes. An FGC train leaves Plaça Espanya every hour from 08:26, and then you go up by rack railway or cable car.

Is the Dalí Museum open on Mondays?

No, except in July and August and on certain dates set by the museum. Avoid Mondays if your tour includes Figueres.
