Who pays the tourist charge

The sanctuary (atrium, basilica and camarín) has a tourist charge with wide exceptions. You don't pay it if you're attending Mass or another service, staying at Montserrat, or a resident of Catalonia, the rest of Spain or the EU, unless you're in a group or on an organised trip. So if you live in Ireland and travel independently, book on the Abbey's website, up to a month ahead, and skip buying that part. If you live in the UK, the US, Canada or Australia, you pay, unless you're there for a service or staying at Montserrat.

Everyone else pays €9 online for the basilica. The Visita Montserrat package (€20) or Visita Montserrat with Throne (€23) beats buying pieces separately if it holds what you want, so read the contents. Everything costs €1–2 more at the ticket office.

Rack railway or cable car

An FGC train leaves Plaça Espanya hourly from 08:26. Then you have two ways up:

  • Rack railway (cremallera) from Monistrol Vila: 15 minutes, usually every 20 minutes, €15 return.
  • Aeri cable car: a cabin every 15 minutes, from €12.50.

For the way back, the rack railway leaving at 15 minutes past the hour connects with the R5 to Barcelona. The T-Mobilitat travel card isn't valid on the cable car or funiculars. As of 4 November 2026, the Santa Cova funicular is out of service until further notice.

Travel card or day trip

Cards such as Trans Montserrat or Tot Montserrat (€71.50 at the Turisme de Barcelona shop) let you do it by train on your own, collecting them at the FGC station at Plaça Espanya. Trans Montserrat gives no priority access to the basilica or Throne. Contents vary from card to card, so compare carefully.

A guided day trip takes care of timetables and connections, but it counts as an organised trip, so residents lose the exemption. More options in day trips from Barcelona.

Your time slot is for the Throne

In Throne packages, the time you book is when you go up to see the Moreneta, the Black Madonna. The Throne closes from 10:30 to 12:00, so don't book right up against that gap. Aim to finish the morning in the basilica at 13:00, when the Escolanía choir sings Monday to Friday. Times can vary.

What I loved most about the Montserrat tour was the breathtaking scenery. The mountains, the monastery, and the peaceful atmosphere made the whole experience feel really special. I also loved learning about the history and culture of the place—it was such a memorable day

It was a nice tour to Montserrat. The tour guide Yorgus aka Papa Bear, was amazing and entertaining. He took care of all of us in the tour and made sure we are enjoying the tour. He gave us good information about the entire site and it was a good experience.

The driver was very prompt and courteous. Our train was late so he accommodated that by still giving us the required amount of time at Montserrat which we did as a deviation from Barcelona to Tarragona. The trip is well worth it and the company having it as an available option ..

Tour was great with fabulous guides. However we did not get what was paid for. Description stated cog railway to monastery but we did not get that, so disappointed as that was one of the unique features of the tour we selected.
