Under-12s enter the Museum’s permanent collection free with an adult; on themed visits they pay a reduced rate.
Booking
Museum tickets are sold at its three sales points or on the official site, 60 days ahead at most. No changes or refunds. Roofs, Pórtico and night visits have a fixed time. The other spaces included can be seen that day or in the next seven, with one entry per space. Roofs and Tower always go in a group with a guide.

What's free

The basilica is free with no ticket, 07:00–21:00. The door is on Plaza de Platerías, and there are no visits during Mass, at 07:30, 09:30, 12:00 and 19:30.

The Pórtico de la Gloria (Portico of Glory) has a free visit with audio guide every day from 16:00 to 17:30, by invitation, two invitations per person at most. It's the same 25 minutes, without the Museum.

What you pay for

Everything else is sold by the Museo Catedral, the cathedral museum.

Ticket Official price What you get
Permanent collection €9 Museum and cloister, on your own
Pórtico with audio guide €15 Fixed time, 25 minutes at most
Roofs and Carraca Tower €15 Guided, 60 minutes, 140 steps
Guided Pórtico and Museum €20 12:15 and 17:30, 90 minutes
Full visit €23 Roofs plus Pórtico
Night visit €25 Tuesday to Sunday, 22:30, 22:45 and 23:00

Every option includes the permanent collection, the Gelmírez Palace and MuSar, which you can see that day or in the next seven. So the €9 ticket only makes sense if you'll skip the roofs and the Pórtico: the €15 tickets already include the Museum. For both, the full visit saves €7.

Roof tours always go in a group, generally in Spanish, and aren't wheelchair accessible.

Buying a ticket

For a ticket alone, use the official site or the Museum's sales points, 60 days ahead at most, with no changes or refunds. The purchase policy warns that a ticket from an unofficial sales point could be fake, and that you'd be refused entry.

The tours listed here are a different thing: a guide and a group. Check which spaces each covers and if you can cancel.

2027 is a Compostelan Holy Year, and sales still open no earlier than those 60 days.

House rules

  • No backpacks. The Museum also bars bags, umbrellas and pilgrim staffs, and has no left luggage.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early for timed visits: latecomers aren't let in.
  • No photos in the Museum or at the Pórtico.
  • The Museum closes on 1 and 6 January, 25 July and 25 December.

For the rest of the day, see Santiago de Compostela.

It was a great introduction to the history of St James as it relates to the Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Our guide, Carolina, spoke clearly and welcomed questions from the people in the tour. She explained things with enough detail so we appreciated the artifacts we were looking at.

The ear pieces were great, I could still hear the guide without having to stand next to him. He was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot, would recommend this tour.

This was an easy trip to book, no fuss. Good value and very straightforward access to the Cathedral. The tour was good and the tour guide was well informed. The museum and artefacts were beautiful and wide ranging. All in all about an hour end to end and it was time to enough to enjoy the tour thoroughly.

I think the outstanding points were being able to see fully the Portico in all its splendour, something I appreciated later as I walked around the main part of the cathedral and saw people straining to get a half decent view of it from the wrong side. Additionally the exhibition about Master Mateo was fascinating. If I had had more time I would have stopped to watch the whole feature film.

The Cathedral and the museum are very good. The audio guide is almost worthless and it was better to just read what was written. Don't bother.
