What you might see

Official tourism says many of the Canaries' whales and dolphins are residents. Pilot whales live here all year. A sperm whale is a matter of luck. They're wild animals, so nobody can guarantee what you'll see.

Port and hours on board

Trips leave from Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, Los Gigantes and Las Galletas. If your nearest port has something similar, don't cross half the coast for another. Where transfers are included, the title says so.

There are 2-hour outings, the classic 3-hour trips and routes of 4.5 to 5 hours that add Masca or Los Gigantes. With small children or a weak stomach, stay on the short ones. Between trips of similar length, the difference is food and drink: a sandwich, catering or lunch. Private cruises only pay off for a group.

The flag before the price

Official Canary Islands tourism advises choosing firms with the "Barco azul" mark, a yellow flag showing they meet the rules. Those rules set a minimum distance of 60 metres and require boats to cut the engine if animals are very close. Swimming with the animals, touching them or feeding them is banned, so be wary of anyone who promises it.
