What you'll pay

Tickets have an exact time. Online they cost from €16, less than at the ticket office, including the Museo de Nerja and the Virtual Reality Room, and the audio guide is free if you download it first. So a seller's ticket with audio guide gives you nothing the official site doesn't. Look at the tickets above if no time is left there. On day trips you're paying for the journey to Nerja and Frigiliana, so check whether entry is included.

The free 09:15 slot: EU citizens only

Sixty places a day, on working days Monday to Friday, for EU citizens only, so UK, US, Canadian and Australian visitors pay. They're released online exactly 48 hours before at 09:15: for a Thursday, be online on Tuesday at that time, with a maximum of 2 per person. There's no entry after 09:15, which from Málaga means leaving very early.

Getting there on time

The cave is in Maro, not central Nerja. Coaches from Málaga to Maro stop there. By car, parking is charged by the minute at €0.030. With no changes or refunds, leave a cushion if you depend on a bus.

The quietest window, says the Fundación Cueva de Nerja, is 10:00–11:30. Last entry is 15:30, moving to 16:30 from June to September and at Christmas, on long weekends and in Easter Week.

Wear closed shoes with non-slip soles, not flip-flops. The visit isn't recommended for people with reduced mobility.
